Derek Jarvis's work on exhibition at Staithes Gallery

Derek Jarvis lives and works in South Yorkshire. He took up painting to fill his time after a riding accident forced him to give up work and has been painting full time for seventeen years.

He is inspired by nature and the landscapes of his native Yorkshire and frequently travels to the North East coast for subjects for his painting. The village of Staithes, its buildings and boats, particularly around the Beckside, appears in much of his work. He is especially interested in capturing the effects of light on his subjects. He cites the French impressionists, the Staithes group and the Newlyn artists as his influences, as well as his friend the well-known artist and broadcaster, David Curtis.

Derek is a member of the Doncaster Art Club.

Exhibitions include: Sheffield Art Show (voted Best Oil Painting 2005);Holmfirth; the Davie Gallery, Tickhill; Blue Apple Gallery, Hope, Derbyshire.

His work is in private collections in the UK, USA, Canada and Australia.
