Lucy Wilson's work on exhibition at Staithes Gallery
Lucy Wilson was born in Ilkley, West Yorkshire and visited Staithes regularly throughout her childhood. She moved to the village in 1996.
She has been interested in painting all her life. She is self-taught and has developed through experience her own technique for observing the familiar sights and views of Staithes. The quirky little cottages with smoking chimneys, boats bobbing in the beck, the sheltering cliffs, fossils, shells and seaweed on the tide line and the cobbled streets from Cowbar round to Penny Steel: all feature in Lucy's work along with some of the mermaid mythology that surrounds the village.
She paints in acrylics on wooden panels, cutting in some of the outlines first with a knife. Occasionally she works on driftwood and allows the wood itself, worn by the sea, to dictate the shape of the painting.
Lucy shows and sells her paintings in and around Staithes. She has discussed her work on the BBC Radio 4's Women's Hour programme.
