Sue Nichol's work on exhibition at Staithes Gallery

Sue Nichol was born in Hartlepool on the North East coast and spent her childhood by the sea exploring rock pools and sailing dinghies her dad built. The legacy of this has been a lifelong love of the sea. She now lives and works at her home in Sheffield , making regular visits to the coast for inspiration.

In her painting Sue tries to capture the texture and atmosphere of land and sea. She paints places she knows well and visits again and again, both literally and in her imagination. She aims to capture them exposed to the extremes and intensity of light. Her paintings are a mixture of bold strokes and impasto effects with echoes of more subtle areas through the use of glazes and fine brushwork. She uses various materials such as sand and paste to create texture.

Exhibitions include: Scottie Gallery, Sheffield; Sheffield University; Ferens Art Gallery, Hull; Wildabout Art, Sheffield; Great Sheffield Art Show; Untitled Gallery, Sheffield; Artfulness, York; Simmonites, Sheffield; Lander Gellery, Truro, Cornwall.

Sue is also a keen photographer and an exhibition of her photographs of Travellers was shown at the Crucible Theatre, Sheffield before touring the city. She also presented a beginners guide to photography on BBC Radio Sheffield.
