We are all eagerly awaiting Staithes Festival of Arts and Heritage 2017. Not only because the village will be full of fabulous guest artists showing their work in cottages and other buildings up the hill and down, but also because our very own Ian Burke has created a whole new exhibition: Watch with Mother, a series of wonderful paintings and woodblock prints celebrating his childhood in Redcar in the 1960’s. In many ways this is Ian’s own personal record but there is much there for us all to identify with: family relationships seen through all-seeing, but not entirely understanding, eyes; and the characters, real, fictitious and imaginary, that populate, on an equal and non-discriminatory footing, the child’s world. If you’d like an invitation to the Private View on Friday 8th September 2017 at 7pm in the Sunday School (Wesleyan Chapel, Staithes), please contact the gallery. Otherwise the work will be on show throughout the Festival on Saturday 9th and Sunday 10th September. After that you can still see the work by appointment.
Ian is also giving a workshop during the Festival: Drawing Portraits from Archive Photography: on Saturday 9th September at 2pm and Sunday 10th September at 11am.
Contact the gallery to book.
