Win this superb artwork by Ian Burke and help support the Whitby Lobster Hatchery project:

Ian Burke has donated this fabulous woodblock print Blue Hummer to raffle in support of the Whitby Lobster Hatchery project.

The ambitious project aims to protect and promote the town’s rich fishing heritage, rejuvenating the old Fish Market on Pier Road to create a lobster hatchery and exhibition centre. The team will collaborate with the local fishing fleet to collect lobsters bearing eggs, which will then be hatched and grown before being released.  This will increase their survival rate and replenish stocks, in turn protecting the fishing heritage of the town and the livelihoods of fishermen.  The project aims to release 100,000 juvenile lobsters a year.  In addition, the exhibition centre aspires to educate the public about lobsters and the industry as well as providing opportunities for research.

Ian Burke is a well-known painter and printmaker who has lived in the area for most of his life. “The project is very close to my heart,” he says.  “Lobsters are beautiful, intriguing, almost prehistoric creatures that have always fascinated me and provide ample subject matter for my work.”  He’s one of our most popular artists at Staithes Gallery and his exhibitions and workshops at Staithes Festival of Arts and Heritage are a huge attraction for visitors.  He is also a regular exhibitor in the Royal Academy and has been a very popular Master of the Drawing Schools at Eton College for many years.
