Staithes Art School: New programme for 2014 – Book Now!!!!

haidee_jo_painting_in_staithesA warm welcome to Staithes Art School 2014! As you can see our, favourite artist/tutors are returning next year to lead painting weekends. Robert Brindley, Bruce Mulcahy and David Curtis all love painting here and are eager to share the experience with you.
We’re very pleased to be welcoming David Allen back and to be able to offer a pastel weekend once again. David achieves stunning light effects from this medium and this will be a great opportunity to learn how he does it.
Haidee Jo Summers came to paint here with the Royal Society of Marine Artists earlier this year. We were amazed at the freshness of her approach and the wonderful effects she achieved, particularly working en plein air. We are delighted she accepted our invitation to come and tutor here and think she will be a great addition to the Staithes Art School team of tutors. This is a picture of her painting among the lobster pots on the staithe.

Click here to see the painting weekends on offer and call Al on 01947 841840 or 07972012464 or email if you’d like any more information or to book.

Opening Soon: Our fantastic new exhibition space The Sunday School

Saturday 14th September will be the opening day of our fabulous new exhibition space, The Sunday School, in the old Wesleyan Chapel on Beckside in Staithes. The inaugural exhibition will be STAITHES 1970: the Lost Archive – an unusual collaboration between two artists across four decades!

In 1970 photography student Anthony Hutchinson spent a month in Staithes documenting in bleak and beautiful black and white photography the lives of the people who were living here.

The images were submitted for his final degree project at Central London Polytechnic and were then forgotten for 43 years. Fast forward to 2012 and painter and printmaker Ian Burke who found inspiration in these images on a number of different levels. He has always been fascinated and inspired by Staithes, and has loved to work with good black and white photography to create his strong, hard-boiled images depicting the buildings, boats, work and traditions of its community. The photographs were a gift and he has built upon the images to create a beautiful series of paintings and prints, at once homage to the photographs themselves but also to the world they recorded and to its inhabitants, past and present.

We love to think that some of the subjects of these images may have attended Sunday School at the Wesleyan Chapel. We hope some of them will come to the exhibition to reacquaint with their former selves. We hope friends and families of those who are no longer with us will come and share their memories. Lovers of Staithes and its heritage will, we hope, enjoy this celebration of the life of the village at this moment in 1970. Anyone who enjoys good art, regardless of how well acquainted they are with Staithes, will appreciate the sensitive and beautiful depictions of a community seen by these two artists across four decades.

This will be the first of many exhibitions we hope to show at the Sunday School. Enjoy it and come again.

The exhibition opens as part of the Staithes Festival of Arts and Heritage 2013. Click on the link for details of the hundreds of galleries and events we have planned for this festival.

Arthur Braun: the Life and Work of a German Post-expressionist Artist

A few people have asked for copies of the dissertation Al wrote about the German artist Arthur Braun for her Masters.

Click here if you’d like to view the pdf.
If it is particularly the pictures you would like to see of some of the many paintings by Braun that she catalogued, they are at the end of the dissertation.
We hope you find it interesting.

DOUBLE ROYAL ACADEMY SUCCESS!!!! TWO Staithes Gallery artists are in the Summer Exhibition! Congratulations Rob and Ian!

Both Ian Burke and Rob Shaw have successfully submitted work for the prestigious Royal Academy Summer Exhibition 2013. Needless to say we are immensely proud of them both. Ian’s lino cut and woodblock prints look back, like much of his work, to his childhood and adolescence on Teesside. In Redcar Casuals and Toe to Toe he has employed the bright colours and strong black lines of comic books like The Dandy and The Beano to zoom in on the boots worn by the Redcar Boot Boys of the 1970s. The familiar footwear, presented in a somewhat abstracted comic book form, celebrate its iconic style yet acknowledge its implications of conflict and threat.

The Summer Exhibition, now in its 245th year, is the largest open submission exhibition in the world and thousands of artists from all over the counrty try every year to be selected. Both Ian and Rob have done incredibly well. Congratulations to both of them!

Ian’s other prints will be available at the Affordable Art Fair in Hampstead (13th-16rh June 2013) and, as always, at the gallery.

SUCCESS!!!! Second time around for Rob Shaw.

St Paul’s Early Morning Light by Rob Shaw: oil on board

We are absolutely thrilled to be able to tell you that Rob will have a painting in the Royal Academy once again this year. This beautiful painting: St Paul’s Early Morning Light has been selected among thousands of entries to hang in the Summer Exhibition at the RA. We’re all immensely proud of him here at the gallery and will be going down to see it (and the rest of the exhbition – it’s always been one of our favourites) on the preview day at Burlington House on Friday 9th June. The exhibition will open to the public on 10th June and runs until 18th August. Huge congratulations to Rob who has worked incredibly hard to achieve this well-deserved success.
Rob has been developing his cityscapes all year, particularly of London but also of Middlesbrough where Rob studied. These very layered images reveal over time the city’s icons and special spaces through veils of shadow, smoke and mist. We will be taking a selection of the London works to the Affordable Art Fair in Hampstead.

LONDON CALLING …..AGAIN: Affordable Art Fair, Hampstead Heath 13th – 16th June 2013

We had such a great time at the Affordable Art Fair in Hampstead last November we couldn’t wait to go back. There is a fantastic buzz of excitement about the place: lots of fascinating contemporary art in a wonderful setting on Hampstead Heath. The fair has been moved to June this year so we might even have good weather this time too!

It was lovely last time to see some familiar faces, friends of the gallery who we don’t see often because they live in the south. If you live in or within visiting distance of London and would like to come to the Fair and would like to come, do get in touch as we’ll have some free and half price tickets to send you. We will be on Stand D3.

Sea Wife by Shirley Fletcher: collagraph on paper

The artists we’ll be taking to the AAF are as follows: Ian Burke, David Curtis ROI RSMA, Paul Czainski, Shirley Fletcher, Rob Shaw, and the sculptor Darren Yeadon.
